PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Australian oil and gas major Woodside has again increased its foothold in Africa, announcing on Wednesday that it had entered into a contract for a reconnaissance licence offshore Morocco.

The company told shareholders that it had entered into an exclusive contract with the national oil company of Morocco to explore a block known as the Rabat ultra deep offshore area.

The block comprises some 36 737 km2 with depths ranging between 1 700 m and 4 400 m, and Woodside would be conducting a two-dimensional seismic survey and studies on the project over the next 12 months.

The block is located just west of the Rabat deep offshore permits, in which Woodside has acquired a 25% interest, subject to Ministerial approval.

Besides the Moroccan assets, Woodside also has a foothold in Gabon, Cameroon and Tanzania.
