Women honoured as pioneers in AI
A South African woman was among the 40 global recipients honoured at the inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) Women Leadership event hosted by global technology firm IBM in Yew York earlier this month.
NYSE-listed IBM recognised the global women leaders and pioneers in ‘AI for business’ across a variety of industries and geographies and using AI to advance their companies in areas such as innovation, growth and transformation.
IBM celebrated the honourees during an inaugural recognition event on June 12 at the IBM Watson Experience Center, in New York.
The women shared their experiences of leading AI initiatives in their organisations during the ceremony with attending students from IBM’s P-Tech programme.
“AI is poised to drive dramatic advances in every industry,” says IBM digital sales senior VP, chief marketing officer and Women’s Initiative leader Michelle Peluso.
“We are sharing the stories of 40 incredible women, who are paving the way forward in [terms of] how AI is advancing businesses and changing how people work and live.”
The women, in industries ranging from telecommunications and finance to education and entertainment, were selected based on their use of AI as a transformation agent to help drive results for their organisations, employees and customers.
The women leaders in AI honourees included South Africa’s Patricia Maqetuka, Nedbank chief data architecture and operations officer.
“We are bringing Nedbank’s services into the future of banking and creating industry-leading experiences for our customers with multiple AI projects,” she says, adding that AI has enabled the bank to break through many barriers to improve core operational processes within its businesses.
The honourees were from the US, Germany, Mexico, Canada, Singapore, Argentina, India, Japan, Brazil, Denmark, South Korea, France, the UK, Australia and Taiwan.
