Wolfsberg delivers first ore in 20 years
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Metals miner Global Strategic Metals has mined its first ore from the Wolfsberg lithium project, in Austria.
This was the first time in 20 years that the project had delivered ore.
Global, which is an Australia-based company listed on the ASX, said on Tuesday that a bulk sample extraction was done after the Austrian Mines Inspectorate approved the start of operations. The bulk extraction formed part of Global’s plans to become the first lithium producer in Europe.
The bulk sample exercise would be completed by the end of November, after which the company would have fulfilled all of the necessary conditions and obligations for the mining leases to be granted for two terms, of 30 years each.
Global said that it would use some of the mined ore from the bulk sample exercise to update the metallurgical testwork carried out in the 1980s, and believed that recent advances in processing technology could have a significant impact on both the recovery rate and the quality of the concentrates produced.
Once in full production, Wolfsberg was expected to deliver 350 000 t/y of ore, for 9 200 t/y of lithium carbonate. The mining rate would ultimately depend on the size of the offtake agreements for saleable products.
The project currently has an inferred Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 16.9-million tonnes, grading 1.6% lithium oxide, with substantial exploration upside.
