Wolf cuts the ribbon at Drakelands
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Wolf Minerals has officially opened its Drakelands mine at the £123.2-million Hemerdon tungsten and tin project, in the UK.
At full capacity, the mine was expected to be one of the largest tungsten concentrate producers in the western world. The Hemerdon project also included a three-million-tonne-a-year processing plant and associated infrastructure. The project was expected to produce about 3 500 t/y of tungsten concentrate and 450 t/y of tin concentrate.
The official opening comes just 18 months after construction at Drakelands began, with first tungsten concentrate produced at the beginning of September.
“The successful financing, development and construction of this world-scale project marks the realisation of the company’s goal of building and operating the first new metal mine in Great Britain for 45 years and becoming a significant producer of tungsten,” said Wolf MD Russell Clark.
At the peak of its construction, the mine employed more than 600 people, with a further 200 permanent jobs created to operate the mine.
