Women in Mining UK (WIM UK) announced last month that South African-born Debbie Thomas had joined its advisory board as nonexecutive chairperson.

WIM UK is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting and progressing the development of women in the mining and minerals sector. Thomas replaces Amanda Van Dyke who stepped down as WIM UK’s executive chairperson.

Thomas’s career in the mining industry spans over 20 years, including stints in the UK and African practices of audit, consulting and advisory firm Deloitte.
During this period, she served as Deloitte’s metals and mining team head and recently as head of its Africa services group.

Thomas has sat on Deloitte UK’s global markets group board, which is focused on outbound investments to and from international markets. She was also a lead partner on the Deloitte Growth Escalator programme, where she mentored CEOs from all industries on emerging market strategy, particularly in Africa.

She was a senior facilitator for Deloitte’s CFO Transition Lab programme, which assisted CFOs in preparing for their new role. Thomas, moreover, created and was the lead training officer for Deloitte’s South African graduate programme, which trains 100 South African graduates every year in London to become chartered accountants.
