WiFi industry gets new regulating body
A new voluntary industry body has been launched to regulate and monitor the WiFi industry in South Africa.
The WiFi Forum of South Africa, led by chairperson Andile Ngcaba, aimed to “create a collaborative and self-regulating body that promotes the effective use of WiFi technologies in the delivery of ubiquitous, inter- operable and seamless connec- tivity in South Africa”.
The forum, founded by Dimen-sion Data, Internet Solutions, Comsol Wireless Solutions and Always On, would be fully operational by March 2014, as the forum appointed a CEO and established policies and programmes to guide and develop the rapidly growing industry.
The new industry body, which would comprise operators, service providers, technology providers and associated parties, besides others, as members, planned to provide an effective collaboration and advocacy body for the industry, similar to the way the FTTH council serviced its industry, Internet Solutions executive for carrier services Raj Wanniappa told Engineering News.
The advancements in WiFi technologies and rapid growth of the industry resulted in the need for an effective mechanism for self-regulation to prevent “rogue” operators, while ensuring adherence to international WiFi agreements, standards, guidelines and practices, and advocate the need to standardise, or the industry would “become a mess”.
