PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The federal government has approved ASX-listed Whitehaven Coal’s proposed expansion of its Tarrawonga mine, in New South Wales, subject to a series of conditions.

The Tarrawonga mine currently has the right to extract some 16.4-million tons of coal, at a rate of two-million tons a year, until 2017.

Under the expansion project, Whitehaven was seeking to expand the mine to the east of the approved mining area, increasing production to three-million tons a year and extending the project life until 2030.

The project was approved by the state government in January this year.

“We welcome the federal government’s approval and are committed to working within the stringent conditions that have been placed on the project,’ said Whitehaven MD Tony Haggarty.

Haggarty said on Tuesday that the expansion project would deliver some A$490-million in yearly direct and indirect turnover, along with A$27-million in yearly household income, driven by some 300 direct and indirect jobs.
