PERTH (miningweekly.com) - The New South Wales Planning Assessment Commission has approved coal miner Whitehaven Coal’s expansion of its Tarrawonga coal mine, subject to a series of strict conditions.

The Tarrawonga mine currently has the right to extract some 16.4-million tons of coal, at a rate of two-million tons a year, until 2017.

Under the expansion project, Whitehaven was seeking to expand the mine to the east of the approved mining area, increasing production to three-million tons a year and extending the project life until 2030.

The miner said on Friday that the approval process for the project had included extensive community and stakeholder consultation, as well as specialist expert assessment and investigation of environmental impacts.

“We welcome the determination by the Planning Assessment Commission and are committed to working within the stringent conditions that have been placed on the project,” said Whitehaven MD Tony Haggarty.

He noted that the project was now awaiting approval from the federal Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.
