PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Whitehaven Coal has set production and sales records for the six months ended December 2014.

The miner reported on Wednesday that managed coal sales for the half-year had reached a record six-million tonnes, while managed saleable coal production also reached a record 5.7-million tonnes for the same period.

For the three months ended December, coal sales reached 2.9-million tonnes, while production reached 2.4-million tonnes. Coal production declined by 17% on the previous corresponding period, while sales dropped by 7% on the previous corresponding period.

Run-of-mine (RoM) production for the quarter ended December reached 2.1-million tonnes, which was also down 33% on the previous corresponding period’s 3.2-million tonnes.

During the quarter under review, the Narrabri mine delivered 770 000 t RoM coal and 1.23-million tonnes of saleable coal. The high saleable coal production was owing to the washing of coal stocks built up prior to the longwall change-out, Whitehaven said.

Both the RoM and saleable coal production declined on the previous corresponding period owing to the six-week longwall change-out, which was completed in the December quarter.

Meanwhile, the Tarrawonga mine produced 537 000 t RoM coal and 491 000 t saleable coal for the quarter, up 1% and 25% respectively on the previous corresponding quarter.

The Rocglen mine produced 300 000 t RoM coal and 201 000 t of saleable coal, while the Werris Creek mine produced 496 000 t RoM coal and 402 000 t saleable coal.

The Maules Creek mine also railed its first coal during the quarter, some three months ahead of schedule. RoM and saleable coal production for the quarter reached 94 000 t and 54 000 t, respectively.

The mining rate at the Maules Creek mine was expected to progressively increase during the March quarter, to reach a yearly rate of six-million tonnes.
