PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment has backed coal miner Whitehaven Coal’s plans to increase production at its Narrabri mine.

The approval would allow Whitehaven to increase annual production from eight-million tonnes a year to 11-million tonnes a year, and would see the miner install a 400-m-wide longwall face at the Narrabri mine.

The longwall face was initially expected to increase run-of-mine (RoM) production by an estimated 750 000 t.

“Narrabri is one of the best and most efficient underground coal mines in Australia. The approval for increased production at Narrabri is another significant step towards achieving Whitehaven’s goal to become Australia’s leading independent coal company, and will drive Whitehaven’s cots of production further into the first quartile,” said Whitehaven MD and CEO Paul Flynn.

At full production, Narrabri’s free-on-board costs were expected to reduce by some A$3/t.

The Narrabri mine produced 7.7-million tonnes RoM coal and 7.2-million tonnes of saleable coal in 2015, and RoM production for 2016 was expected to reach between 6.6-million and 6.8-million tonnes, as two full longwall moves occurred during the financial year.
