PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed gas producer WestSide on Wednesday reported that its plans to expand the Meridian gas field production were on track.

In March, energy major Santos chose the Queensland-based Meridian field as the source of a 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase agreement to supply the Gladstone LNG project.

The agreement would start in 2015, with the gas field expected to deliver up to 65 TJ/d of gas.

The Meridian gas field is a joint venture between WestSide and Mitsui E&P Australia, and currently supplies around 12 TJ/d of gas.

WestSide MD Mike Hughes said that drilling has started this week on the first well in Phase 1 of the development programme, and the well was expected to be commissioned in July.

“Significantly, this will be the first new production well to have been drilled in the Meridian field for more than 18 months,” he said.

Drilling of the Phase 1 programme would involve six new wells, and was scheduled to be completed in August. Planning was also under way for the next phase of drilling and work had started on options for compressing the expansion of the field.
