Wesfarmers increases output in June Q
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Wesfarmers has reported increased production from both its Queensland coal mines during the three months to June.
At the Curragh operation, coal production was 25.2% higher than the previous quarter, reaching 2.8-million tons, while overburden removal was also 23.5% higher than the previous corresponding period.
Wesfarmers noted that coal production at Curragh progressively increased during the quarter as the operation recovered from the impacts of Cyclone Oswald, earlier in 2013.
Metallurgical coal production for the period was up by 28.9% while steaming coal production increased by 17.5%, compared with the previous quarter.
For the full year, metallurgical coal production increased by only 2.3%, to 7.38-million tonnes, despite the successful expansion of Curragh’s export capacity, with production for the full year affected by a scheduled shutdown during the Christmas period, and by significant wet weather.
At the Bengalla operation, Wesfarmers’ share of coal production reached 902 000 t during the quarter, a 27.8% improvement on the previous quarter, as the operation accessed more productive section of the mining sequence.
