JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Wescoal has been granted a 20-year water-use licence for its opencast Khanyisa colliery, in Mpumalanga.

The licence, issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation, was effective immediately; however, the company still required additional regulatory consents from the Department of Mineral Resources before mining activities could start.

“This is another step in the extended life-of-mine (LoM) which was brought into the Wescoal stable in 2009, marking the group’s entry into mining. Khanyisa has consistently outstripped all LoM projections over the period,” Wescoal said in a statement.
