Wescoal on track to meet planned production rate by year-end
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Wescoal’s Elandspruit coal project, in Mpumalanga, was on track to reach its planned production rate of 170 000 t/m run-of-mine (RoM) before the end of the year.
The coal producer had steadily progressed the project following the granting of the Elandspruit water-use licence at the end of March, the first coal delivery in July and the conclusion of a 221 000 t two-month coal supply contract with State-owned power utility Eskom last week.
“The ramp-up period has been well managed and RoM production has increased steadily since July,” acting CEO Waheed Sulaiman said on Wednesday, adding that the operation was “living up to the expectations of being a real catalyst for Wescoal’s growth”.
The company’s processing plant and beneficiated product was also meeting expectations, he said.
The group was on track to reach its processing capacity of just over 150 000 feed tonnes a month, with Wescoal prefront-loading “a lot of work” at the processing plant, with a firm handle on the operating parameters and characteristics.
Unpacking the progress made to date, Sulaiman said the mine design had been completed and preferred service providers identified in May, while site establishment activities started, followed by the first blast, by the end of June.
About 43 000 t of RoM had been produced in the first month of production, with around 83 000 t of RoM successfully beneficiated at the processing plant.
