Both spot and front-year coal prices recorded gains, as Glencore seeks to suspend operations at its Prodeco unit in Colombia for up to four years.

Producers in both Colombia and Russia have recently taken steps to limit output, to help reduce market oversupply at current demand levels.

Coal India has meanwhile launched e-auctions for importers of coal, in line with government’s Aatmanirbharta plan to reduce coal imports to zero.

All coal buyers are eligible to participate in the e-auction, with minimum bids of 25kt for road, and 50kt for rail.

In Europe, carbon prices continue to impact on coal burn, with German 2020 coal imports potentially falling by up to 40% due to the pandemic, and better gas-fired plant utilisation under higher CO2 prices.

Thankfully for SA exporters, countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam continue with robust demand as new power projects get underway.

For now, SA appears to have largely emerged from the recent load-shedding, as slightly warmer weather arrives.

However, the country remains in the grip of the Corona pandemic with cases reported on various coal mines as well.

The conversation around a Just Transition away from coal continues, whilst our research shows that domestic coal price levels will come down to the rate of coal mine closures vs. the rate of Eskom plant decommissioning.
