Water and wastewater treatment specialist WEC Projects has been contracted to deliver water treatment and sewerage treatment plants for employees of diversified miner Anglo American’s Unki platinum mine, in Zimbabwe.

The R16-million project would enable employees based at a nearby housing site to access reliable and good-quality World Health Organisation-compliant potable drinking water through a 125 kl/h water treatment plant. The sewage treatment plant would have a 1 200 kl/d capacity.

WEC Projects sales and marketing manager Graham Hartlett said the water treatment plant, which was expected to be completed within seven to eight months, would treat water sourced from the Impali dam.

The plant was suitable for remote locations, common in Africa, as it was containerised, manufactured, assembled and tested prior to being sent to the site, allowing for reduced on-site build-time.

The modular design would also allow for a future increase in capacity.

The robust technologies integrated into the water system included raw water extraction, chemical pretreatment, flocculation,
lamella clarifiers and sand filtration.
