PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Former Deputy Prime Minister and federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has been appointed as a nonexecutive director and chairperson of silica sands developer Diatreme Resources.

The ASX-listed company on Wednesday said that the appointment, effective from November 2, would significantly enhance the company’s board, providing a strong advocate for economic development, Indigenous engagement, environmental protection and health and safety, with connections across all levels of government.

Current chairperson Greg Starr will return to his role of nonexecutive director.

“We are delighted to have Swan’s support in advancing our stakeholder engagement activities for our Galalar silica project, which has now entered a key phase of its development. The level of corporate understanding and gravitas he brings will be invaluable as the company continues to transition through the final permitting and approvals process to mining,” said Starr.

For his part, Swan said that the Galalar project had enormous potential to generate new jobs and investment for the benefit of Far North Queensland, including traditional owners, while the silica product would help support the Asia-Pacific region’s push for renewables through its uses as a direct component of photovoltaic panels.
