JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A feasibility study into the development of an opencast mine to produce ten-million tonnes of coal a year for State-owned power utility Eskom for the next 30 years has been completed, ASX- and AltX-listed coal miner Waterberg Coal Company (WCC) said on Thursday.

The Waterberg Coal Joint Venture Partners (WCJVP) completed the feasibility study on the Waterberg coal project, in Limpopo, after cementing a memorandum of understanding between the Waterberg joint venture (JV) and Eskom for the proposed coal supply agreement (CSA).

The study remained confidential until WCJVP concluded its update and would be released at a later date as a full bankable feasibility study, WCC director Stephen Miller said in a statement.

Eskom was also expected to test the project’s coal quality over the next 30 days as part of the CSA, the discussions of which were “well-advanced”.

Eskom had already taken delivery of 200 000 t of bulk sample product for a burn test.

The coal project boasted 3.88-billion tonnes of coal, 2.07-billion tonnes of which fell into the measured category.

Meanwhile, WCC had also entered into a letter of intent with its preferred engineering, procurement and construction contractor, Ardbel, a JV between ELB engineering services and the DRA group, for the proposed development of the Waterberg coal project.
