PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian government has joined the Future Fuels Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), as part of its efforts to becoming an industry leader in hydrogen.

The Future Fuels CRC is an industry-focused research, development and demonstration partnership supporting the decarbonisation of Australia's energy networks through the use of low carbon fuels, including hydrogen and biomethane.

“Joining the Future Fuels CRC reflects our commitment to making sure Western Australia continues on its path to becoming an industry leader in hydrogen and future energy industries,” said Hydrogen Industry Minister Alannah MacTiernan.

“The government has invested heavily into renewable hydrogen, which is seen internationally as a leading fuel of the future.

“Renewable hydrogen has the potential to be a major future industry for WA, creating local jobs and helping reduce carbon emissions locally and around the world.”

The state government and Future Fuels CRC are working to find safe and reliable solutions to repurpose existing infrastructure, and developing new infrastructure to transport future fuels.

The partnership aims to ensure the reliable and safe operating life of energy infrastructure, and deliver coordinated safety policy and regulations associated with the production and delivery of low carbon fuels.

The government has committed around A$90-million towards developing a job-creating renewable hydrogen industry, and is on target to meet the 2022 goals set out in the Western Australian Renewable Hydrogen Strategy, MacTiernan said.

The Future Fuels CRC was established in 2018 and includes more than 80 partners in a nationwide collaborative and connected research community.
