US-owned motor control products design and manufacturing company Saminco is planning further expansion into South Africa as its current business in the country grows, Saminco South African MD Jon Anderson says, pointing out that the company specifically focuses in the coal and hard rock mining industries.

Saminco opened its South African facility, in Boksburg, in May last year, where it assembles electric traction drives, which are used to control electric motors, for the mining industry. The facility currently employs seven people.

“We provide the industry with ac variable- frequency drives and microprocessor- controlled dc motor controllers that come with on-board diagnostics and are used on equipment such as scoops, shuttle cars and continuous miners,” he says.

“Our Boksburg facility services all our local mining customers, which include companies such as Sasol Mining, and it provides drive repair, installation assistance and trouble-shooting advice,” he explains.

Saminco also sells electric motors produced by Johannesburg-based electrical engineering company Transvaal Electric internationally, Anderson adds.
