PERTH (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-focused coal miner Universal has mined its first run-of-mine (RoM) coal at the Kangala mine, in the Witbank area.

The Kangala mine is the company’s first coal operation, and will produce 2.1-million tonnes a year of saleable thermal coal, of which two-million tonnes a year has been allocated to power producer Eskom.

The remaining product will be exported.

ASX-listed Universal said on Wednesday that the boxcut, which started in the first week of July, remained on track, with the uppermost coal seam having been exposed.

The first RoM coal schedule from the pit would be used for the base of the product stockpiles to prevent contamination at a later stage, while the remaining box-cut coal would be used during the commissioning of the crushing and screening plant, in December.

Kangala is set to deliver its first production by February. Universal reported that the A$46.8-million project also remained on budget.
