PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Universal Coal has successfully commissioned its New Clydesdale colliery, in South Africa, just days after starting production.

The miner said on Wednesday that following first production on September 8, the first of New Clydesdale’s three coal handling and processing plants have been successfully hot commissioned, with the second plant to be fully commissioned within the next few days.

The project is being developed in two phases, with production initially focusing on the Diepspruit underground area. The operation is ramping up to its phase 1 nameplate capacity of 900 000 t/y run-of-mine coal, and will likely reach this target by December.

Commercial agreement on offtake for the Phase 1 product has been finalised, and first sales are targeted for later this month.

Universal said Phase 2 of the development continued to advance in line with long-term offtake discussions, and would be an openpit development at the adjacent Roodekop project.
