Unity decides against cyanide ore processing at Dargues
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior gold miner Unity Mining will not proceed with on-site cyanide ore processing at its Dargues gold mine, in New South Wales, given the current market environment and public feedback.
The company’s decision to abandon the cyanide processing facility followed the completion of a public consultation and exhibition period for the proposed modification to the project plan.
It is believed that some 84% of the public submissions received by the state’s Department of Planning had been opposed to the cyanide proposal.
The miner added that it had also taken into account the overly extended regulatory process and onerous timeframes relating to the required approvals for the cyanide processing facility and the current market environment.
Unity said on Wednesday that the company would now, instead, revert back to the original processing plans for the Dargues mine and would seek approval for relatively minor modifications to allow for the full development of the gold mine to start.
Various options for off-site concentrate processing were also being actively pursued, the company said.
The Dargues underground mine was, according to a definitive feasibility study, expected to deliver some 50 000 oz/y of gold from the mining of 330 000 t/y of ore.
Meanwhile, amid the furore around the cyanide processing facility, Unity boss Andrew McIlwain had handed in his resignation as MD and CEO, effective September 30.
Between October and December, McIlwain would support Unity in a part-time consulting role, while Frank Terranova would assume the role of acting MD to facilitate the requisite transition.
