JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – In an offer described by trade union Solidarity as “unacceptable”, the Chamber of Mines (CoM) has made a revised offer of a 7.5% wage increase for entry-level employees in the coal industry.

The offer included a 6.5% increase in employees’ housing allowance.

However, there was no change to the offer of a 6.5% wage increase for all other employees regarding the first year of the wage agreement, Solidarity reported.

“It is also unacceptable that the skilled employees received a lower offer percentage-wise than the entry-level employees. The practice where skilled employees subsidise other employees’ salary increases cannot go on. It is also a dangerous practice, which is now threatening to cause discord between members in the same union,” Solidarity general secretary Gideon du Plessis stated.

He added that the chamber’s revised offer was rejected by all participating trade unions, which had appealed to the CoM to improve on its offer during the last round of the negotiations set for August 12.

The CoM was not immediately available for comment.
