Transnet Freight Rail’s Ore Corridor network restored to design capacity
Transnet Freight Rail is pleased to announce that it has restored full network capacity on the Ore Corridor. This, following major renewal work that was undertaken during the annual maintenance shutdown in November 2022, as well as uplifting capacity limiting temporary speed restrictions.
We also addressed major damages including that from a derailment and wash away that were brought on by heavy flooding and necessitated the rebuilding of an embankment. The damages emanating from the derailment required shutdown conditions and could not be repaired between trains.
Furthermore, the network experienced losses due to Force Majeure (FM), events as a result of inclement weather resulting in bridge closures, lightning warnings at the mines, the Transnet strike and the Western Cape Taxi industry strike also had a negatve impact on performance. These FMs are registered with our customers.
In the last year, the line also had experienced an unpresidented locust infestation.
Collaborative efforts with industry and stakeholders have been implemented to deal with the plague. Of great concern is the locust infestation that has exended both southwards and northwards. This is not only doubling the affected area but is adding increased complexity, given the steeper gradients on parts of these sections of the Corridor.
We continue to work with industry and stakeholders in an effort to improve throughput and efficiencies on the network.
