Transcending Borders In The Zone

Western Australia’s developing cultural and economic relationships with South Korea will be highlighted through a new exhibition, Transcending Borders, at The University of Western Australia’s Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery.
Participants at today’s In the Zone Business Forum will have the unique opportunity to preview the compelling exhibition this evening, following the formal program of events. Using the Berndt Museum’s significant collection of historical Korean material as a catalyst, contemporary Australian and Korean artists were invited to venture beyond real and imagined borders using performance, moving image, photography, painting and sound.
The UWA’s Winthrop Professor and Director of the Cultural Precinct, Ted Snell AM, said Transcending Borders was the first time that the Berndt Museum’s Korean collection has been on public display and provided a unique opportunity for audiences to see works by participating contemporary artists. “The exhibition aims to encourage further engagement and cross-cultural collaboration between Australian and Korean communities using art and artifact as a conduit,” he said. Currently offering the only BA Korean Studies program in Western Australia, UWA’s School of Social Sciences is proud to support this exhibition as a campus partner.
Exhibition curator Kelly Rowe said: “The exhibition testifies to the possibilities of transcendence through art, where new meaning and greater understanding can be found in the most unexpected contexts.’ Following tonight’s preview for In the Zone participants, Transcending Borders will be officially opened at 6pm today evening, 2 May, and will run until 12 July.
