AngloGold Ashanti CEO Mark Cutifani accepted an offer last week to become the new head of struggling resources group Anglo American, whose iconic Johannesburg offices are pictured above. Although Cutifani is an Australian, he developed a deep sensitivity to the issues confronting South African mining during his tenure at the gold major – a sensitivity that should stand him in good stead in light of the fact that many of Anglo’s most troubled, yet promising, assets are still situated in the country. His operational and project experience could also prove more than useful in dealing with some other underperforming mines and projects.
