Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has completed the third and final phase of a R30-million refurbishment of the 35-m-long, 900 t outer caisson at the Port of Durban’s 90-year-old Prince Edward Graving Dock.

Following delays caused by heavy rains and a late start on the comprehensive repair programme, the structure, which was handed over to TNPA in December 2015, has now been commissioned after a longer-than- expected period.

The outer caisson was put into its operational position on March 4 and connected to the driving system on March 8, after which two tugs and a barge were docked for repair.

“Work involved structural repairs to the first of two steel lock gates that separate the dock into two compartments and seal off water from the harbour to enable repairs and maintenance work to be carried out on ships serviced at the facility,” said Durban port manager Moshe Motlohi.

The contractors made up for the time lost after starting 21 days late owing to an unexpected overrun of repairs on the Africa Mercy in August; however, the heavy rains in late November and early December prevented the contractors from being able to apply the finishing touch – corrosion protection.

The outer caisson repair project marks the first of 11 large-scale projects under Operation Phakisa at the dry dock to get the facility into peak condition by 2019.

“Congratulations to the TNPA engineering team, contractors Channel Construction, managing contractors Sebata Group and technical advisers Naval Africa – KwaZulu-Natal’s only naval architecture firm – for meeting the challenge of delivering this project and overcoming the numerous hurdles faced along the way,” Motlohi concluded.
