PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper miner Tiger Resources has reached commercial copper cathode production at its Stage 2 solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant, at the Kipoi project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The miner on Wednesday reported that the milestone was achieved in July, with Tiger producing 1 501 t of copper cathode, operating at 72% of the 25 000 t/y nameplate capacity.

Tiger MD Brad Marwood pointed out that it was a significant achievement for commercial production to be reached within six weeks of start-up, which he said demonstrated the quality of the project.

“It can often take more than six months to bring an SX-EW plant to full production - I expect we will beat this target.”

The plant was expected to produce about 14 000 t of copper cathode in this calendar year, and a further 25 000 t of cathode in the first full 12 months of production.
