PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper miner Tiger Resources is on the verge of copper cathode production, with the miner targeting first production in the second quarter of 2014.

The Stage 2 solvent extraction electrowinning (SX-EW) operation at the Kipoi project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was about 92% complete, Tiger reported on Wednesday.

The project remained within budget and ahead of schedule, the copper miner said.

During the three months to March, Tiger mined 765 568 t of material at its Stage 1 heavy media separation (HMS) operation, to deliver 424 597 t of high-grade ore, averaging 5.9% copper and 162 770 t of medium- and low-grade ore averaging 1.4% copper to the run-of-mine (RoM) stockpile.

Ore mining activities at the Stage 1 operation would be suspended at the end of May for three years, with high-grade ore to be stockpiled on the RoM pad, representing some eight months of feed to the HMS plant and other stockpiles available as first feed to the SX-EW plant.

Meanwhile, copper production was below budget for January and February, as modifications to the HMS plant were implemented to reduce wear from processing abrasive material.

During the three months under review, the HMS plant produced 6 518 t of copper, with 30 968 t of concentrate sold to generate a revenue of A$22.5-million.
