TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – North American base metals miner Thompson Creek Metals has loaded its first ocean shipment of concentrate from its new Mt Milligan mine, in British Columbia.

Based on preliminary weights and assays upon ship loading, the NYSE- and TSX-listed company said this first shipment consisted of 5 530 wet metric tonnes of concentrate containing about 2.8-million pounds of copper, 5 540 oz of gold and 10 500 oz of silver.

The concentrate was loaded in Vancouver on November 16 and the company expected to receive a provisional payment for 90% of the value of the concentrate in early December.

“We are pleased to have loaded our first shipment of concentrate just 12 weeks following the start-up of the Mt Milligan mine. This concentrate shipment represents a tremendous milestone for our company and our employees. We expect Mt Milligan to create substantial value for our company and our shareholders,” Thompson Creek CEO Jacques Perron said in a statement.

Perron told Mining Weekly Online in a recent interview that the most critical challenge for Thompson Creek in 2014 was to get the Mt Milligan mine operating at maximum capacity as soon as possible.
