The E in ESG for Mining - Environmental Compliance for Mining
ESG continue to be the key source of opportunities and risk for mining and metals industries in 2023. The "E" factor considers how a business utilizes natural resources, such as water, as well as the effects of its activities on the environment and the communities it works in. The mining process is still aggressive and intrusive, and activities frequently have a significant negative environmental impact on both the immediate area and the global ecosystem. Despite strict regulation and considerable efforts by mining corporations and the government to build forward-thinking and sustainable initiatives, “current industry practice is characterised by inconsistent legal compliance and reflects concerning legislative gaps”.
With this in mind, Intelligence Transfer Centre is hosting the Annual Conference titled ”The E in ESG for Mining” on 17 & 18 May 2023 at CSIR, Pretoria.
The aim of the conference is to explore and address environmental challenges faced by the mining industry with a focus on compliance, enforcement and prosecution. Representatives from governmental authorities, environmental law enforcement agencies and leading experts will provide meaningful insights and emerging trends and responses to environmental risk assessment. The conference will also focus on reporting with practical implementations and recommended policies.
Some key issues that will be addressed:
- Looking at the legislation that governs mining and environmental matters in South Africa
- Focusing on the Environmental Impact Assessment Management Strategy (EIAMS) in Mining
- Discussing environmental policy stringency and compliance for mining
- Deliberating water management and the mining industry
- Handling mine tailing safely and sustainable environment
- Managing air quality, dust control and blasting in mining
- Mining Waste Management and Disposal Methods
- Mining transportation and its effect on the environment
- Emphasizing climate change in mining
- Highlighting technology in mining and its impact on the environment
- Highlighting principles, legal requirements and technical aspects relevant to rehabilitation and mine closure
- Discussing challenges and opportunities for environmental sustainability in mining
- Safe and sustainable mining with ISO standards
- Turning risks that environment issues pose on mining operations into competitive advantage that improve reporting and compliance
- Understanding how standard work instructions and standard operating procedures improve environmental compliance

Industry leaders will be invited to engage with delegates surrounding issues of best practice and risk management to ensure compliance efforts are maintained.
