Black-controlled Exxaro Resources has implemented the Siyathuthuka Butterfield Bakery project as a local economic development initiative for the Emakhazeni community, in Belfast, where it mines coal. The 100%-black-owned bakery is yet another example of the manner in which the South African mining industry sets out to uplift near-mine communities. The bakery directly employs 16 people, 12 of them women, and one disabled person, and indirectly assists 64 others in an initiative that complements the countrywide need for nutrition and enterprise development.
