The Advanced Group, which recently pooled its available resources and introduced its Advanced Healthcare Services and Systems programme, has launched its newest product, Advanced VITA Solutions to the South African market.
Advanced Healthcare Services executive Trevor Fiford tells Engineering News and Mining Weekly that Advanced VITA is stabilised hypochlorous acid, a completely natural, non-toxic and environment friendly solution that is ideal for sanitising, decontaminating, disinfecting and sterilising the human body and surfaces.
Hypochlorous acid is manufactured naturally by white blood cells in all mammals for healing and protection. It is a powerful oxidant that is effective against invading bacteria, fungi and viruses in the body and the environment.
Fiford explains that the name VITA means life in Latin, “which is exactly what hypochlorous acid offers: it gives us life, it gives us hope.”
Advanced VITA is effective in killing all pathogens, microbes, prions, bio-film and viruses, with the US Environmental Protection Agency approving it as a disinfectant for use against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.
Although not tested specifically on the SARS-CoV-2 virus, VITA has been successful in eliminating a surrogate virus to test its efficacy.
Advanced VITA successfully eliminated the test surrogate virus, human coronavirus strain 229E, which is very closely related to SARS-CoV-2.
“The test resulted in a 30-second kill rate with 99.994% reduction on human coronavirus strain 229E. If we had that effect on the surrogate virus, then we are quite comfortable that that is the same effect that we are going to have on SARS-CoV-2,” explains Fiford.
Advanced VITA is one of the most effective, safest and cost-effective sanitizers on the market and can be safely and effectively used for sanitizing, decontamination, sterilizing and disinfecting. It is 100 to 300 times more effective as a disinfectant than bleach.
He remarks that VITA is also highly effective in killing and removing bio-film. Bio-film can be a problem in several industries, including hospitals, medical and pharmaceutical industries, dentistry, food processing plants and water treatment plants.
“Most sanitizers do not provide for a full kill and are largely ineffective against bio-film. A 70% alcohol solution cannot kill bacterial spores or prions,” he warns.
However, hypochlorous acid is safely and effectively used in the healthcare industry, for food safety and water treatment, as well as for general sanitation.
Advanced VITA is completely safe for humans and it can be applied on the entire body, making it the perfect non-toxic sanitiser for the whole family.
Because hypochlorous acid is naturally produced in the human body, it is non-toxic and can be safely used on and in the human body as well as in the natural environment.
Advanced VITA poses no risk of poisoning or damaging human cells and tissue. It can also be sprayed in a work environment or in hospital wards or factories without the need for staff members or patients having to vacate the area or building during use.
Fiford notes that it is one of the few products that can be used directly on the points of infection, which includes inside the mouth and nose of a patient.
VITA can also be applied into ventilation and air conditioning systems of hospitals, shopping malls, office blocks and factories to decontaminate circulated air and kill airborne pathogens and prevent aerial cross contamination.
Advanced VITA has four categories of intervention: it is a sanitiser, a decontaminator, a steriliser and a disinfector. When used in killing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Advanced VITA can be used to wipe down (or deep clean) an area, to fog an area as large as 10 000 m2 or to spray an area. These applications can be used simultaneously, or independently, depending on the environment and the circumstances.
Fiford disagrees with the notion that decontamination tunnels are not useful in combatting Covid-19.
“Many of these tunnels spray toxic decontaminants onto people, often causing skin and eye irritations as well as a feeling of dampness on the clothes. However, because Advanced VITA is completely non-toxic and 100% safe for human use and the environment, it can be effectively and safely used in decontamination tunnels with no ill effects on the user,” he states.
Hypochlorous acid, unlike chlorine bleach or alcohol sanitisers, is 100% safe and non-irritant. If it gets on your skin or in your eyes, it will not burn.
“If you have the virus on you or on your clothing, which we now know is possible since the virus is aerosolized, a decontamination tunnel spraying Advanced VITA is helpful in killing the virus outside of the human body and therefore reducing the chance of spreading the virus,” explains Fiford.
The spray tunnel at Advanced FST’s Alberton head office uses this technology, which has resulted in an 82% reduction of bacteria on the shoes of those walking through the tunnel.
“The design of the tunnel and sufficient contact time for the application of the product is critical in the fight against Covid-19,” he states.
Advanced VITA is effective with just a 30-second contact time. Therefore, if a decontamination tunnel gently mists an occupant for just 30-seconds, this allows sufficient contact time to kill the virus.
It begs the question, why is hypochlorous acid not given the recognition it deserves as an effective, simple and non-toxic sanitiser? “It is often the case that we ignore the simplest solutions, because we doubt that something so simple could possibly be the answer for such a complex problem,” Fiford muses.
Another benefit of hypochlorous acid is that it is relatively inexpensive to manufacture when compared with alcohol-based disinfectants, making it much more affordable for low-income families.
Advanced VITA is manufactured exclusively for Advanced by local producer B-Safe.
And, as a proudly South African company, the Advanced group of companies aims to make a valued contribution to stop the spread of Covid-19 and to get South Africans working again.
