When Jerry Shivambe of Capstone Trading cc won the contract to pave Mandela Barlow Street in Limpopo, he chose, without hesitation, Technicrete’s Double Zig-Zag Interlocking pavers and kerbs. Acting on behalf of the Greater Lethaba Municipality, Shivambe is undertaking an ambitious paving project in the Modjadji Satellite Municipality. This will see the transformation of Mandela Barlow Street – three kilometers of unpaved gravel roadway in the Kgapane rural area – into a neat, attractive and durable street capable of carrying heavy loads.

The Modjadji Municipality lies within the realm of and is named for the legendary Rain Queen of the Balobedu people. The Rain Queen is believed to have special powers, including the ability to control the clouds and rainfall and, unusually for Africa, succession to the throne is matrilineal.

When the three kilometers of paving has been completed, Technicrete will have supplied and delivered 15 400 m2 of 80-mm-thick Double Zig-Zag Interlocks and 2 800 kerbs from their Olifantsfontein factory to the Kgapane site. The Double Zig-Zag interlocks have an established reputation of creating durable and hard-wearing surfaces that are ideal for heavy-duty applications such as roadways and a wide variety of commercial and industrial facilities. The kerbs serve not only as edge restraints, but also divert rain-water from the roadway into the drains that are inserted every 900 metres.

In a move calculated to involve the community, Capstone Paving is, as far as possible, drawing its labour force from the surrounding communities. In addition to remuneration, the company is providing skills upliftment and training to the workforce, which constitutes 50% women – a group that is often overlooked. This will equip the community with transferrable skills that will be of benefit to all in the future.

By early May 6 000 m2 of the Interlocks as well as 600 m of kerbs had been delivered to the site. Technicrete’s Mishack Mdhluli has liaised closely with Jerry Shivambe of Capstone Trading and has worked hard to ensure that supplies of pavers and kerbs have never delayed the progress of the project.

Jerry Shivambe elaborates:  “I very much appreciate the way Mishack has helped me. He has really made sure that deliveries are always on time and enhances my reputation with the municipality thereby improving my chances of winning more contracts.”

To establish Technicrete as the supplier of choice for rural development projects in the region, Mdhluli keeps in close contact with all contractors who have been awarded municipal tenders. Technicrete’s reputation for excellent customer service goes a long way to ensuring that they are top of mind when the choice of supplier is made.

Work on Mandela Barlow Street started in April this year and should be completed by the end of June 2013.
