R319m contract awarded for emergency acid mine drainage works
State-owned Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) has concluded a third agreement enabling the entity to move ahead with its acid mine drainage (AMD) emergency interventions in the Central basin of the Witwatersrand.
The TCTA, mandated by the Department of Water Affairs to tackle AMD in the Witwaters- rand mining areas, has awarded a R319-million contract to JSE-listed Group Five for the construction of treatment works and monitoring shafts in the Central basin.
Group Five will start construction of a water treatment plant this month, with commissioning to follow in October.
In December the TCTA concluded an agreement with DRDGold surface gold tailings retreatment subsidiary the Ergo group, allowing access to land for the construction of the AMD pumping and treatment facilities.
The agreement also incorporated the use of infrastructure and co-disposal at Ergo’s tailings facility, as well as an option for Ergo Mining Operations – a member of the Ergo group – to acquire up to 30 Mℓ of untreated or partially treated AMD a day from the TCTA for its operations.
Further, Central Rand Gold last month donated two pumps for use in the basin to contain the rising water table below the environmental critical level of 186 m below the surface.
Meanwhile, the TCTA prioritised the upgrade of Rand Uranium’s existing water treatment plant as an immediate solution for the Western basin.
The plant, which was commissioned in May, had effectively stopped the previously uncontrolled decant of AMD since September. The TCTA said a second-phase upgrade was planned for early this year.
Interventions in the Eastern basin were expected to start later this year.
