PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Graphite miner Syrah Resources has completed the furnace installation at its Vidalia operation, in the US, enabling the company to demonstrate vertically integrated natural graphite active anode material (AAM) production at a commercial scale.

The company on Monday said that this was a significant milestone on Syrah’s path to becoming a vertically integrated producer of natural graphite AAM, as production from the furnace was the final stage in the processing of natural graphite for use in lithium-ion batteries.

“In our view, this milestone further positions Syrah as the most progressed ex-China option for vertically integrated supply of natural graphite AAM for US and European battery makers and OEMs,” said Syrah MD and CEO Shaun Verner.

“We have been very encouraged by initial feedback from in-progress product testing and qualification processes. Syrah remains on track to become an important supplier of natural graphite AAM to ex-Asia markets.”

The company is progressing a detailed design on the initial expansion of production capacity at Vidalia, and a final investment decision on the construction of 10 000 t/y facility is planned for the second half of this year, subject to customer commitments and financial partnerships.

The facility currently has a production capacity of 5 000 t/y of unpurified spherical graphite and 200 t/y of purified spherical graphite to battery specification.
