JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum group metals (PGM) group Sylvania on Friday said it did not expect any development delay after it withdrew and subsequently resubmitted a mining right application for its Volspruit project, near Mokopane.

This followed an inability to supply additional environmental-impact assessment (EIA) information requested by the Department of Mineral Resources, after expected floods, on which the information would be based, failed to materialise.

“The information [to complete the EIA] was planned to come from the regular flood event on the Nyl river, which flows in close proximity to our proposed openpit mine,” Sylvania commented in a statement.

Sylvania, which was unable to secure an extension, owing to legislation, said the reapplication would allow a groundwater specialist time to complete the study on the possible groundwater interaction between the Nyl river and the planned three-million-ounce PGM mine.

It would also give the company “the opportunity to better model the impact of the mine design on the environment”.

A decision on the EIA was expected within 120 days of submission of the new application.

The move was not expected to delay the project start-up; however, the group was considering voluntarily delaying, selling or relisting the project as a new entity, besides others, on the back of an ongoing depressed platinum price and weak demand.
