Students Can Log Into The “Real World”
Company Announcement - In support of making students more work-ready by being capable of using office technology, Senwes, in partnership with iVolve, has contributed ten new computers to the value of R65 000 to the Vuseleli Sport Sim, Vuselela TVET College’s first work environment simulation centre. This fully equipped centre, that enables office administration, management and marketing students, amongst others, to have a practical work experience in a simulated office environment, was inaugurated on 4 February on the Klerksdorp Campus of Vuselela College. This sponsorship forms part of a partnership between Senwes and Vuselela College which originated in 2012.
Joe Maswanganyi (Senwes Executive Director) emphasised the role that tertiary institutions have to play in preparing young people with the skills required in the economy. He also said that those skills need to be relevant to the needs of the business world.
“One of the things we identified was the lack of technological resources to assist students in gaining practical experience. Technological innovations are becoming increasingly critical in teaching students. It is important for us to enhance the skills of young people so that we can help them to become employable. We know that in this country we face a challenge of uneducated, unemployed and unemployable people. But we don’t want to add to that by having educated but unemployable people and technology is important in ensuring we solve that problem before it happens,” Maswanganyi said.
The Principle of Vuselela College, Ann Naik, responded by saying that it is very difficult to source support and that it is their mandate to produce students that are not textbook bound but have the practical components as well. Alida Janse van Rensburg, the lecturer who runs the centre, noted that this development can also help students to be productive much quicker in the workplace. She explained that each student has a simulated enterprise where they develop skills like teamwork dynamics, communication skills and leadership skills.
