It is in the make-up of South Africans to talk things out and to reach consensus on the way forward. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who has been mandated to do just that for the strife-torn mining sector, called mining’s who’s who to a special meeting at the Presidential Guest House, in Pretoria, this month to agree a joint document. Reflecting the spirit of the meeting are Minerals Minister Susan Shabangu and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union president Joseph Mathunjwa. Government, labour and business agreed to continue to meet quarterly over the next 12 months, or as frequently as required, to return normality to a sector that generates 60% of South Africa’s export revenue.
