Straits Resources temporarily suspend Mt Muro mining operations
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - ASX-listed Straits Resources has temporarily suspended mining at its Mount Muro gold operations, in Indonesia, following a directive from the provincial governor of Central Kalimantan.
At this stage, it was unclear why the provincial governor had given the order to down tools, but Straits MD Andre Labuschagne said that, while the company did not agree with the legal basis of the directive, it had chosen to voluntarily cease mining activities, on a short-term basis, as a sign of good faith, while the company seeks to address the matters raised in the directive.
“It is extremely disappointing that this type of action is occurring, as it disrupts the continuity of production during a critical period as we ramp-up production,” he said.
“It also has a flow-on financial effect in the local community surrounding the Mount Muro operations, as we will be standing down some of our workforce during this period.”
He noted that Straits had secure tenure over its mining leases through its third-generation contract of work, and added that the directive from the provincial governor did not have any impact on either the validity of or the continuation of the contract of work.
While mining at the project has been suspended, the Mount Muro mill would continue to operate, treating stockpiled ore.
The Mount Muro operations were impacted by flash flooding late last year, with the miner only restarting operations during December. The project had been expected to reach full production by March this year, to produce some 100 000 oz of gold equivalent.
