STIMULATING DEMAND FOR PGMs:

19th July 2019

If South Africans make use of their superior sunlight and their prime wind, they can generate a lot of carbon-free electricity cheaper than Eskom does when it burns coal and pollutes the planet. That, in itself, is wondrous. But there is more. For example, if one puts that clean electricity through water, in an electrolyser, one can generate hydrogen, helped by platinum and iridium dug up in South Africa’s many platinum group metals (PGMs) mines. The hydrogen can, in turn, be sent to a fuel cell, where more locally mined platinum can be put to work, this time to persuade the ubiquitous gas to generate electricity. But that, my friends, is not yet the end of the PGMs fairy tale. It continues, because hydrogen is an inherent electricity storage medium; it can store electricity for days, weeks, months or years. Unlike batteries, it refuses to run down. Instead, it remains at the ready to become electricity at any time. All this is done without a smidgen of carbon being emitted. Could the world ask for more? Hardly, and the opportunity is there for the taking.
