Steve Phiri appointed nonexec director of Merafe

JSE-listed chrome producer Merafe Resources has appointed former Royal Bafokeng Platinum CEO Steve Phiri as an independent nonexecutive director, with effect from February 1.

Phiri holds B luris, LLB and LLM degrees and he has more than 20 years of experience in the South African mining sector including various roles at Royal Bafokeng Platinum, where he served as CEO, and Royal Bafokeng Holdings.

He previously served as CEO at Merafe from 2003 to 2010, and as nonexecutive director of the board from 2010 to 2015.

Phiri is a member of the council of the International Platinum Group Metals Association.

He was a board member of the association before becoming its president and chairperson.

He was previously the VP of the Chamber of Mines, which is now known as Minerals Council South Africa.

The board has welcomed Phiri and says it looks forward to his contribution to the Merafe group.
