‘Step change’ govt support impresses Amplats CEO
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The support that the South African government was lending to the mining sector represented constructive engagement, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) CEO Chris Griffith said on Wednesday.
Griffith, who hosted a lunch to brief the media, said the message he would like to leave was that there had been a step change in the engagement between the mining industry, government and labour.
“It’s important for us to all try to support that process,” he told journalists.
The mining industry and government were engaged in conversations different from the past, following President Jacob Zuma’s recent intervention of bringing stakeholders together under Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and key Cabinet Ministers.
He was under no illusion that arriving at solutions would be all plain sailing, but he was optimistic that all parties would accept the draft document on ensuring sustainable mining in South Africa that had been agreed last Friday under Motlanthe’s auspices.
Government, organised labour and business also committed to continue to meet quarterly over the next 12 months, or as frequently as required to ensure common action.
After Friday’s long period of discussion by the who’s who of South African mining, all parties recognised the mining industry's centrality to South Africa’s economy and job creation, as well as the need to strengthen the sector in the current difficult global economic conditions.
In the interim, the attendees had agreed, broadly, that it is crucial to ensure law and order.
“The collective environment is that intimidation has got to stop,” Griffith said.
At the same time, there was no desire to exercise dominant brute force as those doing the intimidating were in the minority.
“The draft is clear on the need for law and order and I don’t think the industry is going to continue to see the nonsense of intimidators being back on the street the next day,” Griffith added.
