PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner St Barbara has exceeded its full-year production expectations after reporting a solid June quarter result.

During the three months under review, St Barbara produced 99 359 oz of gold, compared with 111 288 oz produced during the previous quarter. Full-year production increased to 377 387 oz, which exceeded the upper end of the guidance range of between 350 000 oz and 370 000 oz.

The quarter-on-quarter decline was put down to mining ceasing at the King of the Hills project, in Western Australia, during April, while the processing of stockpiles continued during the quarter.

The King of the Hills mine produced 15 014 oz of gold during the quarter, compared with the 11 836 oz delivered in the previous quarter, while full-year production reached 49 677 oz.

The Gwalia project, in Western Australia, produced 57 208 oz of gold during the quarter ended June, and a record 248 142 oz during the full year. St Barbara noted that the strong quarterly results from Gwalia included the scheduled return to near-reserve mined grade and the start of a number of new stopes, which resulted in the mine exceeding its full-year production target.

At the Simberi mine, in Papua New Guinea, gold production during the quarter comfortably exceeded the 100 000 oz/y target run rate, resulting in another cash flow positive quarter.

The mine produced 27 137 oz of gold during the quarter, compared with the 22 498 oz produced in the previous quarter, while full-year production reached 79 568 oz.

The Simberi mine reached its targeted run rate of 3.5-million tonnes a year during the June quarter, and during the month of May achieved a record production of 10 005 oz of gold.
