Name of the Project
Springfield coal project.

Location
The project is located within the Vereeniging-Sasolburg coalfield, in Gauteng, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Canyon Coal.

Project Description
Springfield has coal resources of 307.86-million tons, with an estimated mine life of 40 years.

The Springfield area contains top seam, as well as non-select and select bottom seams.

Production is targeted at 600 000 t/m of coal.

The project will comprise the construction of a 1 000 t/h processing plant to beneficiate the coal volumes produced, with current planning allowing for the conventional truck-and-shovel, roll-over mining method to be used.

Infrastructure will include a railway siding; weighbridges; a substation for power supply; stormwater infrastructure, such as pollution control dams, slurry facilities and sewage treatment facilities; and civil infrastructure such as roads and culverts.

Potential Job Creation
As per the mine’s social and labour plan, submitted as part of the mining right application, a workforce of about 300 full-time staff will be employed by the mine. This figure excludes the construction workforce as well as the countless contractors, service and goods providers required to successfully operate the mine.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
An estimated R1-billion will be spent to develop the mine.

Planned Start/End Date
According to the current project programme, construction at Springfield will start in the fourth quarter of 2020, with first coal production expected by the first quarter of 2021.

Latest Developments
Canyon Coal applied for a mining right and environmental authorisation in August this year, with the regulated enviro-legal process under way. Canyon has also started to engage bulk service providers such as Eskom and Transnet.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
None stated.

On Budget and on Time?
Too early to state.
