Southern Hemisphere gets EIS approval for Los Pumas
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Dual-listed Southern Hemisphere Mining has received approval for the environmental-impact statement (EIS) at its Los Pumas manganese project, in north Chile.
The ASX- and TSX-listed company said that the EIS approval cleared the way for project development to start.
“Los Pumas is an attractive project with excellent logistics and the ability to deliver a premium quality product with beneficiation,” said Southern Hemisphere MD Trevor Tennant.
The Los Pumas project forms part of Southern Hemisphere’s diversified portfolio of projects in Chile, and was estimated to contain a measured and indicated resource of some 18.3-million tonnes, grading 7.6% manganese, as well as an inferred resource of 5.4-million tonnes, grading 8.6% manganese.
A preliminary economic assessment (PEA) of the project found that Los Pumas could produce some 300 000 t/y of manganese product, over an initial seven-year life-of-mine.
Tennant noted, however, that while the manganese price had been strengthening recently, it still had not yet reached the price level used in the company’s PEA.
“Our strategic focus remains on copper/gold projects in Chile, including our strategic alliances with key partners. However, this gives us a very good future option on manganese production, should we decide to pursue it.”
In the meantime, Southern Hemisphere would focus on the development of its flagship Llahuin copper/gold project, in central Chile, which has a measured resource of 112-million tonnes, grading 0.42% copper, and an indicated resource of 37-million tonnes, grading 0.37% copper. The project also has an inferred resource of a further 20-million tonnes, grading 0.36% copper.
