PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed KBL Mining has been given environmental approval for its Sorby Hills silver/lead/zinc project, in Western Australia.

The Ministerial approval came shortly after the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) dismissed an appeal against the development of the project.

Western Australian Environment Minister Albert Jacob imposed a number of conditions on the approval, including continuing compliance reporting, the development of a groundwater-dependent vegetation monitoring and management plan, as well as a heavy metals monitoring plan.

KBL is expecting to start construction at Sorby Hills by mid-2014, with operations expected to start 12 months later.

A prefeasibility study for a Stage 1 development at Sorby Hills based on a conventional openpit mine and sulphide flotation concentrator operation, has found that the project could deliver 400 000 t/y of ore.

The mine will produce 20 000 t/y of lead and 800 000 t/y of silver over its ten-year life-of-mine, and will require a capital investment of A$70-million.
