Daphne Mashile-Nkosi has often exercised patience in the 12 years that it has taken for her manganese mine project to advance from being a twinkle in her eye to becoming a built complex, where a mine shaft and sinter plant stand tall near Hotazel, above the hot sands of the Kalahari, in the Northern Cape province. But as executive chairperson and cofounder of Kalagadi Manganese, she remains dead set on completing the last leg of the plan – the building of a manganese smelter that will turn 700 000 t of the total of 2.4-million tons of sinter into high-carbon ferromanganese. International development finance institutions, including South Africa’s State-owned Industrial Development Corporation, are stepping up to the plate to provide funding and Export Credit Agency support is being sought for the funding of the first four of an expected six furnaces earmarked for the smelter, which will be located within the Coega industrial development zone at the deep-water Ngqura port, near Port Elizabeth.
