Precious metals mining multinational Sibanye-Stillwater is hosting a series of webcasts and live streams during August.

“We believe that by co-creating a shared vision and delivering on tangible and sustainable socioeconomic programmes for the benefit of local communities, a new legacy of healing and hope will emerge.”

Launched in 2020 under the patronage of Archbishop Thabo Makgoba under the themes of 'honour, engage and create', the Marikana renewal process acknowledges the events that took place in August 2012 and their impact, and calls on all stakeholders to work together to rebuild relationships and communities affected by the tragedy around the operations where the injured and deceased employees lived.

This Letsema process involves an inclusive approach to social and community facilitation through collaborative engagements and to ensure the delivery of tangible and sustainable programmes for the benefit of the communities around Marikana.

“By recognising the past, we also look to the future. In 2020, Sibanye engaged stakeholder specialist ReimagineSA to plan and undertake an extensive stakeholder engagement process aimed at finding ways to bring sustainability, healing and renewal to Marikana and beyond,” the company said on August 11.

“While the Letsema process is ongoing, we commemorate by sharing and reflecting on the stories which emanated from that tragic week in 2012.”

Sibanye continues its journey of collaboration with all stakeholders for the renewal of Marikana.

The first community story took place on August 8 when Matshepang Ntsoele, whose husband Molefi Osiel Ntsoele died in the tragic events of August 2012, tells her story of healing.

“Pain is not the end of the road; it can be the beginning of a new journey and you should not focus on the past, but rather focus on the future,” she said.

“To honour the memory of those who passed away, we have committed to provide support to the widows and families by way of housing, education and employment,” Sibanye said.

Further, on August 11, Anthandile Twazi and Nonkanyiso Molwana told their story about their hopes and dreams as they start the next phase of their lives. They are recent graduates.

Through the 1608 Memorial Trust, Sibanye has committed to growing young talent and continues to support the dependants of those who lost their lives at Marikana in 2012 by providing educational assistance up to, and including tertiary level, the company said.

On August 12, the company and its representatives will engage the people of Marikana through YouFM’s morning show, hosted by presenter Pat Cash, to delve deeper into the Letsema process which is driving a new way of engaging with the people of Marikana, and speaking to local community members about their hopes for the future.

On August 16, Marikana Primary School headmaster Andrew Phuza will talk about the primary school that was handed over to the North West Department of Education in 2018. There are 936 pupils under the care of Phuza and his team of teachers.

“Education is important because it opens doors, it also changes the behaviour of a person and it is a weapon to fight poverty,” said Phuza.

On August 17, the Marikana Memorial Lecture will take place. Dr Mamphela Ramphele, who is the co-founder of ReimagineSA is a keynote speaker and she will be joined by Archbishop Makgoba, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe, Sibanye CEO Neal Froneman and ReimagineSA director Luvuyo Madasa.

The Marikana Memorial Lecture was initiated in 2020, as part of Sibanye’s commitment to the Marikana Renewal programme, and in honour of those who lost their lives at Marikana in 2012, the company said.

Meanwhile, Mama Elizabeth will tell her story about how her love of gardening has created a secure and increasing supply of healthy food and income for her family and will leave a lasting legacy for her children in Modderspruit.

“At the heart of the Marikana renewal is a commitment to invest in socio-economic development so as to create sustainable communities and enterprises that will endure long after mining has ceased,” Sibanye said.
